What does children’s dentistry involve?

Welcome

When you and your child arrive at our practice, we warmly welcome you. We take time to make sure your child feels comfortable in the clinic surroundings and at ease in the dental chair before we begin.

Consultation

We ask you and your child how their teeth have been since their last appointment and if you have any concerns. We also ask if your child is feeling fit and well, and is generally healthy.

Examination

During the examination, we look closely at your child’s teeth and gums, charting any changes and noting any areas of concern. If necessary, we apply fluoride gel to their teeth to protect against decay. We also monitor your child’s development and how any adult teeth are growing, to make sure any issues are detected and treated early.

Advice

Our aim is that your child will not require any further dental treatment through regular examinations. However, if any treatment is needed, we create a bespoke treatment plan, detailing the procedures involved. We also give advice on how to help your child clean their teeth effectively at home, if needed.

Frequently asked questions

When should my child visit the dentist for the first time?

It is best to get your child used to visiting the dentist from an early age. Begin taking them along to your dental check-ups once they get their first tooth, so we can start looking after their oral health.

How often should children visit the dentist?

Regular dental check-ups are crucial for maintaining good oral health in children. We recommend that children have a dental examination twice a year to best protect their teeth and ensure excellent oral health.

What is fluoride application?

We can apply fluoride gel to children’s teeth to help protect against decay and cavities. This is a quick and painless procedure which strengthens enamel and works alongside brushing routines at home. It is recommended that all children over the age of three should have a fluoride application twice a year.

How can I help my child look after their teeth?

To reduce the risk of decay and cavities, encourage your child to brush their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and limit sugary snacks and drinks. Regular dental check-ups are also essential for early detection and prevention.

My child is anxious about visiting the dentist - what can be done?

If your child is feeling nervous or worried about visiting the dentist, we can help. We prioritise a patient-focused and friendly approach, helping to make dental appointments fun. We understand dental anxiety, and work closely with you and your child to create positive associations and a relaxed atmosphere.
