What is a routine dental examination?

The most common reason for visiting the dentist is for your routine dental examination. It enables us to take a close look at your mouth, make sure your teeth and gums are healthy, and offer preventative care to stop any issues from developing.

We believe in preventative dentistry, and your dental check-up forms the foundation of this. It is a very effective way for you to stay in control of your oral health, and receive invaluable reassurance that your mouth is in the best condition. It also gives you the chance to share any concerns and get some tips and advice for your dental routines at home.

What happens during a dental check-up?

Warm welcome

When you arrive for your routine dental examination, we warmly welcome you and invite you into the surgery to begin your appointment. We ask how your teeth and gums have been since your last visit, and if you have any concerns or questions for us.

Extensive examination

The main part of your dental check-up is a comprehensive examination of your mouth. We look at your jaw joints (TMJ) and check your gums and periodontal health. We also examine your teeth, checking for any issues such as decay, fractures and damage. The soft tissues of your mouth are also looked at, and we carry out an oral cancer screening.

Digital scans & x-rays

We may take digital scans and x-rays at your dental check-up, to help us see below your gum line and monitor any bite or tooth wear issues. X-rays also help us give you a full picture of your oral health, as we share any findings with you straightaway.

Bespoke advice

Throughout your appointment, we explain everything we are doing so you understand our process and procedures. Once your examination is complete, we advise if any further treatment is needed and create your treatment plan if so. We also give you some bespoke tips and advice to help you keep your teeth and gums healthy at home.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I schedule a routine dental appointment?

We recommend that most people schedule a routine dental appointment every six months, to ensure ongoing excellent oral health and provide the best prevention against dental diseases. However, we may suggest that you leave a longer or shorter time between your appointments, depending on your individual case. After your appointment, we will advise you when to book the next one based on the current levels of your oral health.

What is the importance of preventative dentistry?

Preventative dentistry helps you stay in control of your oral health, avoiding unnecessary treatment by keeping your teeth and gums in the best condition possible. Attending regular dental examinations means we can spot and treat any dental issues before they become a larger problem, reducing your risk of gum disease and decay.

How can I prepare for my next dental appointment?

The best way to prepare for your next dental appointment is to keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy with an excellent hygiene routine at home. You could also make a note of any concerns or questions you have so you remember to cover everything you need to during your appointment.

What should I do if I experience dental pain in between appointments?

If you experience dental pain between your regular appointments, please contact us. We can give you some personalised advice over the phone, and can book you in for an emergency appointment to give urgent treatment to get you out of pain if necessary.

Do I need to fill in any forms before my appointment?

When you first attend the clinic we will ask you to complete a ‘Smile Check’ form. This form is updated every two years and gives our patients the opportunity to provide any feedback on the clinic and service as well as keeping your dental records up-to-date.
