Why is dental hygiene treatment important?

Dental hygiene treatment and care is essential to help you maintain healthy teeth and gums, fresh breath, and a brighter smile. Our highly trained dental hygienists are experts in providing bespoke hygiene services to prevent gum disease and tooth decay, protecting your mouth from harmful bacteria.

We are best placed to look after your oral health, building on your brushing routines at home to ensure effective plaque removal. A professional teeth clean can reach areas that are not easily accessible with at-home care, tackling any build-up to stop damage and decay. Our dental hygienists also spend time examining your teeth, looking for signs of gum disease and providing tailored treatment if needed before problems can develop.

What happens during a dental hygiene appointment?

Examination

To begin your dental hygiene appointment, we warmly welcome you and make sure you are feeling relaxed and ready. We ask you a little about your oral health, and how you have been looking after your teeth and gums at home. We explain the treatment process we will be carrying out, which may be one of a number of our hygiene services.

Scale & polish

Your scale and polish treatment begins with a professional deep clean of your teeth. We remove stubborn plaque and tartar deposits from all areas of your mouth, using special instruments and techniques. We then polish your teeth, removing superficial stains and leaving them feeling smooth and clean.

Air polishing

Air polishing is an easy, effective and pain-free way to give your mouth a deep and powerful clean. We spray the controlled jet of warm water, air and flavoured sodium bicarbonate onto your teeth, removing plaque from above and below the gum line. With air polishing, we can also get rid of staining on your teeth, leaving you with brighter and healthier-looking teeth after one short appointment.

Periodontal treatment

If you have periodontal disease, we can use extensive hygiene treatment to help you control this. We show you how best to maintain good oral health at home, and which teeth cleaning methods are best for your case.

Tips & advice

At the end of your hygiene appointment, we give you some personalised tips and advice on how to care for your teeth and gums at home. We can also show you how to use interdental brushes or floss to get the best results.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I see a dental hygienist?

Many people book an appointment with the dental hygienist at the same time as their regular dental check-ups, twice a year. Depending on your oral health, we may suggest leaving a longer or shorter time between your visits, and we advise you when to book your next appointment. Our Smile Plan includes two hygiene visits per year.

What does a dental hygienist do during a teeth cleaning?

During a teeth cleaning, the dental hygienist carefully removes all plaque and tartar deposits from even the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth. This greatly reduces your risk of gum disease and tooth decay. The dental hygienist also professionally polishes your teeth so they look and feel bright, fresh and healthy.

What are some tips for maintaining good oral hygiene at home?

To maintain good oral hygiene at home, you should brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day, and use interdental brushes or floss to reach and remove any food deposits or bacteria between your teeth. Also, try to limit the amount of sugar in your diet and make sure you visit the dentist and hygienist regularly.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease occurs when plaque and tartar build-up around the teeth and gums is not effectively removed. The gums become swollen, red, and inflamed, and bleed when brushed, which is a sign of the early stage of gum disease, gingivitis. This can be reversed with careful hygiene treatment, but can progress to periodontitis if left untreated. Periodontitis is a more severe condition, causing pain, loose teeth and even tooth loss. It cannot be reversed but can be controlled with the proper treatment and care.

How can I prevent gum disease?

The best way to prevent gum disease is to look after your teeth and gums and keep your oral health in good condition. Brush your teeth twice a day, and use interdental brushes or floss daily. It is also important to see your dentist and hygienist regularly, so they can keep an eye on your oral health and spot and treat any signs of gum disease before they become a bigger issue.
